The clothing culture of Thailand has various beautiful types. But there is a significant one made from chintz that is called ‘Pakama’. The yarn dyed fabric has been a cultural symbol of Thais for more than nine hundred years. A lot of Thais are familiar with it from a young age. In the past it was worn more by men than women. There are many advantages from using Pakama. Firstly, it was able to wipe sweat, remove scurf from the body. Men liked to place it on their shoulder, tie it around the waist and carried it when they took a trip. It was not worn to be fashionable or for decoration. Secondly, it was clothing to cover the body and it usually used for the lower-part and the upper-part, if there was no prohibition in the use for the upper-part. It was comparing to a normal appliance. Thirdly, it was used mainly for people apparel or cover in the rural areas, city people remarked it as funny and out-trend. The development of the versatility of the Pakama from past to present can be seen by its use for dressing-up, taking a bath, tie around the waist, sew up to make clothes, shoes, making bed linen, pillow, sheet, towel, head-band, cradle-tie for children, protection from the sun, making beautiful stage decoration, to be a souvenir or gift. Therefore, these perceived advantages of the Pakamas have disappeared from Thai society at the present and the Pakama is seen to be strange and unfashionable. The author is interested with this cloth and would like to present its development in individual regions. The aforementioned details show the chintz being used for the versatile ‘Wonder Pakama’ by the creative thinking of Thais.
